Their main application is to transfer power between an AC system and the DC transmission network. AC filtering prevents the converter station from causing interference of the AC grid (including capacitor towers, right of Spare Parts Area). Their robustness and reliability are of paramount importance for the transmission system’s availability.

The increase of power demand creates new challenges for their design. Additional losses by current harmonics are not so special for transformer designers. A speciality are valve windings.

Using a star-to-delta or “wye-delta” connection of the transformer windings, the converter can operate with pulses for each cycle in the AC supply, eliminating numerous harmonic current components. It does not have transformers for changing the voltage levels. Heat loss occurs in converter substation, which has to be reduced by using the active cooling system.
